Parenting with Pets Book Reviw & Giveaway: A MUST READ!

Parenting with Pets:
The Magic of Raising Children with Animals
by Christine Hamer & Margaret Hevel

Do you have a pet?
Are you considering adopting a pet?

Not sure which pet is best for your family?
Do you have young children?
Do
you have a challenging teen at home?
Do you have a child with a learning or physical disability?
Is your elderly parent lonely?
What to expect from pet ownership?
Do you work with children?
Do you work with a pet adoption agency or rescue shelter?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you need to read this book. When I was offered the opportunity to review this book, I was expecting another pet fluff piece. You know the kind: the free pamphlets you receive at the pet store, adoption center, in your bag of pet food.

I was thrilled to discover that this book is not only well-written and informative, but a thorough study of the benefits of pet ownership from countless perspectives. I will admit that I've had exposure to most of the thoughts and theories within this work, but never in such a comprehensive, cohesive and "from the heart" manner.

The authors, Christine Hamer and Peg Hevel, have woven a thoughtful and thought provoking study of the numerous benefits of pet ownership. They have incorporated their own experiences as well as stories they have gathered from interviews, to illustrate the enrichment, joy and, at times, pain of the strong bonds between pets and children, teens, families and the elderly.
This work flows seamlessly and is a pleasant, easy read.

Christine Hamer, M.S., CCBC, holds a Master's Degree in Animal Behavior, numerous certifications and board positions and currently works with canines as a trainer and behaviorist.

Margaret Hamel R.N., B.S.N., P.H.N, has worked as a Nurse Health Educator, a community/family liason and as a family counselor.

Both bring their deep love of animals and strong foundation in education to this work, pushing beyond pet basics and leaving their readers with solid perspectives and proven parenting advice.

Parenting with Pets is written honestly, with real understanding of the joys and challenges facing both families and individuals. Within you'll find the best overview of what to expect from pet ownership, as well, a thorough outline of pet specific care and needs by species to help you in selecting the best pet for you and your family.

Potty training our kitten started out as a nightmare. She spent about 2 weeks going #2 behind our bedroom door before I decided to place a small litter box there and slowly moved it to her "sisters" litter box. worked
like a charm!

I liked her communication and training tip that the dog will keep doing what it is doing if it gets a reward. That is true, because when a dog does something it will keep doing it to get the reward. I make my dog sit before eating. It works well.

Limiting training sessions to 15-20 minutes, but training consistently everyday was the most helpful tip for me! And I loved the dumpster diving example in the Timing section!

I like the tip "give an obedience direction only if you are prepared to follow though". My brother and dad both want my dog bark when it's convenient for them. As soon as they don't want him to bark, they yell at him. Tazz doesn't understand at all and when I tell them not to encourage his barking, they say "he's a dog, dogs bark". Ugh! It's irritating!

I have a Bull Terrier named Tazz!

Lauren E said...

Tazz doesn't like motors. This includes the vacuum, lawnmower, snowblower, etc. When we adopted him, we started "claiming" the vacuum so that he wouldn't nip at it. We've had great success with this and we are able to vacuum right beside him without him reacting. We can even vacuum him if we want. The lawnmower and snowblower are next, but are a lot more dangerous.

I always recommend that you and your dog have some degree of obedience training before you begin to modify your pet’s behavior Obedience work provides the base of a common set of vocabulary with expected behavioral responses to work from.
