Helping you show them the way ~ Cool Conduct book for kids ~ Giveaway

When my children were younger and we ran into a conflict, I would jokingly tell them, "Really ~ that is how (it) has to be.  Says so right in the Mom book!"  I'd hold up a dictionary and share with them that it was the Mom's Book of Rules and shrug, as if to say "sorry, Charlie".

After the conflict subsided, we would have a two sided conversation about the "why" behind the appropriate choice or behavior.

Of course, this only lasted until they could read.  Then they were on to me and my Mom tricks!

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a real Mom book?

Cool Conduct by Nicki Donley
Creator of MOC green gifting cards is also the author of a fantastic book for kids, Cool Conduct ~ 100 Ways To Make A Positive Impression!

a fun and educational question and answer book identifying manners, etiquette and safety.  Cool Conduct is designed to encourage discussions that develop kind, loving and respectful children.

Nicki brings a plethora of experience to her work, as the mother of triplets, a Junior Achievement Counselor and extensive work with elementary school students.

Reading Cool Conduct will help children understand values, such as courtesy, empathy and respect.

Cool Conduct covers such topics as:

MOC ~ The Green Solution to Gifting ~ Review & Giveaway

Move over greeting cards, now there's a greener, more affordable solution!

I have to be honest...
I really am not a greeting card person.

While I'll admit that it's true, if you have a hour to comb through the overwhelming selection of greeting cards at any retailer, you'll find at least a couple of choices that reflect your sentiments.  Who has the extra hour?

While I love being thought of and it is always nice to get personal mail or a card on a gift, my interest in cards is primarily, and nearly exclusively, any special hand-written message within.

Then, of course, there are the outrageous prices!  $4.95 and way up!  I would much rather spend that money on more "gift" for my recipient, whomever it might be!

Don't get me started on the waste!  What really ends up happening to all those cards?

Now, I do save everything the kids receive.  Yes, I'm one of those crazy Mothers with a file box for each year of their lives.   Memoirs from shows and concerts, sporting events and vacations.  All of their report cards, homework, artwork, notes from their teachers and sports schedules.    Of course, they'll likely be my age by the time I actually do something constructive with it all!

The rest...well...

If you are a greeting card hum-bug, like myself, or even someone just looking for greener choices, you'll love MOC ~ Move Over Cards ~ the greener, economic choice for gifting!

MOC is the environmentally responsible and affordable way to give gifts. Occasions such as birthday parties, baby showers & holiday gift giving rarely require greeting cards.  You need to convey the gift is from ME to YOU in a fun and elegant way.  Go ahead, re-use those gift bags, reduce paper waste and stop spending $4.00 on individual cards.
                                 Hello MOC!
It's no surprise that MOC was created by a savvy, green Mom!
MOC was born when owner Nicki; a mom of triplet girls and avid recycler often felt traditional greeting cards were not always necessary. Nicki’ s philosophy, Be Good to the Earth, meant helping to reduce paper waste, not creating more. Therefore, when she started designing her own line of gift enclosures she knew ‘throw away’ envelopes were not required. What separates MOC from other products are the convenient "6 pack" gift tag sets and all MOC products are made from post consumer recycled paper. MOC products save time and money without having to compromise on style and elegance.

Celebration Tag Pack
Stylish and unique, MOC 6 pack sets come in a variety of assortments; perfect for all of your gifting needs:

  • Birthday Tag Pack
  • Celebration Tag Pack
  • Seasonal Holiday Tag Pack
  • New Baby Tag Pack
  • Annual Holiday Tag Pack
  • Thank You Tag Pack

Thank You Tag Pack
The quality of MOC is fantastic and the colors of the graphics on this post don't really do them justice.  The designs are just what I'd choose!
Created on a heavier, post consumer recycled card stock, you'll be proud of the finishing touch they add to your gifts!  With an attractive, unique graphic on the front and space to add from you to them on the reverse, you'll appreciate your MOC 6 pack, available for only $4.00!  Less than the price of most greeting cards!

Would you like to add a personal message, along with your MOC, on your gift?  Simply tape the MOC to your package, pen your message on a piece of recycled stationary and attach with the MOC ribbon for an extra special touch!

***SPECIAL OFFER***
Add a few MOC Tag 6 Packs to your gift & wrap supplies here and take advantage of a special savings, just for That's What She Said readers!
Take advantage of the spring promotion and get a MOC 6 pack for 1/2 off for every full price MOC 6 pack you purchase!  That's two 6 packs for only $6.00!  Saving green and going green!  Love it!

Camelbak Groove helps you Green Up ~ Review & Giveaway

We've established, without a doubt, that the use of  disposable water bottles are a HUGE faux pas for the environmentally friendly.

As the weather warms up and spring sports start up
(hooray for lacrosse season!)
most of us are taking stock of our outdoor supplies.

Umbrella....check
Sports blankets...check
Sunglasses...check

PLEASE do not forget your refillable water bottles!  The Earth, and all of us here at That's What She Said, thank you!

Of course, if your young sports stars are anything like mine, you'll find that you aren't finding some of your vital supplies!

Sigh.  If only they made those elastic mitten strings with clips for everything your child takes out of the house!

Whether you've found your collection of refillable water bottles or not, I strongly encourage you to consider adding a Camelbak Groove to your collection.

The Camelbak Groove is unlike any refillable water bottle in my collection and its features make it the first bottle I want to grab on my way out of the door.

Why?

The Camelbak Groove features a self-contained, portable filtration system which allows you to have freshly filtered water ~ anywhere!  It literally filters your drinking water while you sip!

100% BPA-Free
CamelBak® Got Your Bak Lifetime Guarantee™
Easy to refill and easy to use bottle with a filter built into the straw. Turn tap water into fresh, great-tasting water anywhere you go.
Durable, BPA-Free, easy to carry and spill-proof.
Flip & Sip: Sip with ease, flip shut for storage and no spills with the patented CamelBak Big Bite™ Valve.
Dishwasher safe.

 How?
The Camelbak Groove works similarly to water filtration pitchers, with a plant-based carbon filter through which water travels before you drink it.  The filters are functional for approximately 30 gallons of water, 2 - 3 months worth of use.

Discerning Drinkers think...
Yes, my teenage daughter is a finicky water drinker.  That is not to say she doesn't like to drink water, rather that she is particular about the water she drinks.

My parents retired from the 'burbs to the country a few years ago.  (Twenty front acres planted with soybeans and twelve chickens and my father thinks he's a farmer ~ a story for another post!)

Their well water smells like rotten eggs and tastes terrible.   I can certainly understand no one wanting to drink it, but our "city water" at home is absolutely fine.

Not, however, to Miss Picky.

With her year round commitment to sports: Cross Country, Track and Lacrosse,  it has truly been a challenge to encourage her down a greener path!

Enter the Camelbak Groove!
Miss Picky met her match in the Camelbak Groove!

Makes water taste great...CHECK!

Design and pinkness alone, my recently received Camelbak Groove was quickly claimed by said teen, although she was very skeptical about it's ability to transform our water into something she would find palatable.  Off to the Lacrosse fields it went.

I was thrilled when she returned home with glowing reports about how fantastic the Groove was and, most importantly, how well it worked!

Houston, we have a Camelbak convert!
As she travels the nation this summer, playing college scouting lacrosse tournaments, her Camelbak Groove will be with her!
"It makes the water taste so good, Mom!"

The Camelbak Groove retails at $25.00, and with a 6 pack of replacement filters, enough for a full year of filtration, for $25.00, I can save over $250 a year, as compared to buying multipacks of disposable water bottles, and even more compared to single purchases!

The Groove is available in four colors: Blush, Cool Blue, Graphite and Sea Foam.

Camelbak also offers stainless steel Groove bottles and kid friendly BPA-Free Tritan Bottles in designs any kid would love!

A product you can support, a company you can feel good about...
Camelbak is a company that I can feel good about supporting, not only because of their quality product, further for their environmentally conscious mission and operations, as well as their altruistic efforts.

Hope in a Bottle Program

Nearly one billion people around the world lack access to clean water. CamelBak has partnered with Water.org to help.  Water.org is a non-profit founded by actor Matt Damon and social entrepreneur Gary White to provide global access to clean water and sanitation. You can help people in need of safe water, too, by purchasing a limited edition, custom-designed CamelBak water bottle in insulated stainless steel ($24.99) or BPA-free plastic ($18.99) at http:/gift.water.org. Over $10 from every purchase directly supports Water.org to transform lives with safe-water access.

Going Greener ~ Kids Konserve Snak Pak Lunch Kit Giveaway

People in the US buy more than half a BILLION bottles of bottled water every week ~ enough to circle the globe twi

Plastic bags do not biodegrade. Light breaks them down into smaller and smaller particles that contaminate the soil and water and are expensive and difficult to remove. Less than 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled each year. Recycling one ton of plastic bags costs $4,000. The recycled product can be sold for $32. When the small particles from photodegraded plastic bags get into the water, they are ingested by filter feeding marine animals. Biotoxins like PCBs that are in the particles are then passed up the food chain, including up to humans.
                               Clean Air Council:
                                                Waste and Recycling Facts

Before you grab another resealable bag when packing your child's lunch, consider how easy it is to make a difference nearly every day!

Kids Konserve can help!  They are all about the common goal we all have...to help the environment by helping you with eco-friendly every day options at affordable prices.

The Kids Konserve waste-free lunch kit and other reusable products were the natural outgrowth of what two women saw as a big need that required immediate attention. With the premise that any business they undertook had to help the environment in some way, it didn’t take much imagination to see how they, as parents of young children, were contributing to garbage landfills, pollutants and sending the wrong message to their own children. How could they set an example of conservation for their children and empower them to be the examples of change for the future?
Kids Konserve offers a full line of eco-friendly products, specializing in lunch kits that are bright, fashionable and user friendly!

Pea Green 24/7 Compact & Reusable Shopping Bag

From store

Butterfly Waste Free Lunch Kit
to school bus door,

20oz Stainless Steel Bottle

to the sports field,

you can green up how your child's lunch impacts the environment, creating an eco-example and opening the door to conversation and education about conservation with your child.

High quality products that are also earth-friendly?  Sturdy construction with cool and bright design?  Rethink your lunch and snack on the go resources and find greener alternatives from Kids Konserve!

My family was given an opportunity to test the Kids Konserve Snak Pak, and we love it!
Even my son thought the green design was cool and funky!  The Snak Pak is made of a cotton draw string bag which is machine washable and can be line or light machine dried.  The bag is approximately 9" x 13" so it fits perfectly in a backpack!  Within the kit, you'll find also a cotton napkin, a stainless steel leak proof food container and a Food Cozy - the answer to the disposable plastic bag dilemma!

Food Kozy

The Food Kozy is a 13.5" plastic round with velcro closure which can be used in place of disposable plastic bags in both your packed lunches and snacks, as well as for food storage at home!  Washable with warm water, the Food Kozy is made from #4 plastic and is recyclable!

The Kids Konserve Snak Pak retails for $22.00 and you may elect to add a 20oz Kids Konserve Stainless Steel Water Bottle for only $8.00 more!  Extra Food Kozys can be added to your order as well!  Choose from Orange, Green, Magenta and Mud designs.  5 packs available for $23.00 or 2 packs for $9.00.

As a lunch packer, I found the Snak Pak to be completely functional, very chic, but I do recommend selecting some additional containers, such as the Stainless Steel Nesting Trio and the Insulated Food Jar for additional packing options!

Beyond providing eco-friendly options for consumers, Kids Konserve strives to educate and inspire.
Kids Konserve offers a product, MOST importantly Kids Konserve is a message.  Kids Konserve spreads the word about the importance of REUSE.  The company recently celebrated their 2nd Anniversary and they are driven by the amazing response they have received and warmhearted by the impact that they are making.

Dawn Junior Wildlife Champions ~ Education and Wildlife Altruism

An important part of pampering the Earth is pampering its residents ~ all of them!

DAWN is a leader in the effort to champion wildlife, as well as raise awareness and promote student education.  Partnering with Discovery Education, International Bird Rescue and The Marine Mammal Center, DAWN has launched the Junior Wildlife Champions program to educate youth and promote stewardship in animal rescue and preservation.

From investigative research to hands-on experiments and at-home activities, the Junior Wildlife Champions curriculum offers FREE lesson plans and tools to explore the issues surrounding oil spills and engages students to get involved in wildlife education in their own ways.

The Junior Wildlife Champions program offers free lesson plans, geared for grades 3-5, on topics such as Investigating Oil Spills, Wildlife Rehabilitation and Saving Wildlife.

DAWN offers educators and parents an opportunity to provide feedback on their Junior Wildlife Champions lessons plans here.  Contributors are offered a free gift from DAWN and the Marine Mammal Center for their classroom!

DAWN's thirty year commitment to saving both birds and marine wildlife from both natural and man-made crisis lends authority and experience to this program.  Beyond their generous financial contributions, one million dollars over last year and this,  to International Bird Rescue and the Marine Mammal Center, DAWN is making an investment in our future by focusing on educating a new generation to be Wildlife Champions.

"As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Gulf oil spill and 40th anniversary of Bird Rescue, the Junior Wildlife Champions program is especially timely for parents and teachers to marry current events with education," said Jay Holcomb, Director Emeritus of International Bird Rescue.  "We are thrilled to see this movement proactively promote all Americans – at every age – to be responsible for our environment and foster this passion within today's youths."

While the Junior Wildlife Champion program is new this year, DAWN has been promoting involvement in wildlife stewardship since 2009, with their Everyday Wildlife Champions program.

In June 2009, Dawn embarked on its Everyday Wildlife Champions program, a social forum that unites more than 300,000 individuals who share a passion for wildlife with an opportunity to connect and communicate.  From March to September, Junior Wildlife Champions will add one million school-aged children to Dawn's movement.  For more information about Dawn's Junior Wildlife Champions, please visit Facebook.com/DawnSavesWildlife.

The Junior Wildlife Champions program will speak to students, especially through the assistance of three Junior Wildlife Ambassadors, who exemplify the mission of the Junior Champions program in both their care for creatures and their specific endeavors.

Gavin (age 7, Arizona) is educating children and adults alike on beach and ocean clean-up through his “Rescuing the Ocean” activities and website.  Gavin was the grand prize winner of the “Give Back. Simple Wins” essay contest, in which Bayer donated $5,000 in Gavin’s name to the Surfrider Foundation for ocean and beach preservation.

Ellie (age 10, Maryland) is a dedicated fundraiser, and in 2009 she was the first child in the U.S. to raise more than $500 for The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC) for its “Dollar-A-Pound” campaign.  Ellie was invited to participate in the Center’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting event in recognition of her fundraising efforts.  This year, Ellie is working toward a goal of $2,000, which will bring her total to nearly $5,000 raised for TMMC via bake sales and community activities.
Olivia (age 11, New York) is a budding ornithologist and wildlife artist who has donated her watercolors, raising nearly $200,000 for Gulf recovery efforts. This spring, Olivia is releasing her first book, “Olivia’s Birds: Saving the Gulf,” featuring Olivia's hand-drawn illustrations, bird facts and photos.
Get involved in this important effort and spread the word!

Five Easy Steps for Going Greener ~ Pamper The Earth Celebration

In celebration of Earth Day and upcoming Arbor Day (April 29), I've been researching products and choices to help my family go greener!  We want the Earth to keep looking like this...

and not turn into this!

In doing so, I came up with five easy steps to help my family and yours in going greener!

Step One:
PLAN A FAMILY EXCURSION:
Now that spring is upon is, what better time to reconnect with your family and nature at the same time!

Whether you traverse to water or wood, committing, recommitting or advancing your family's green efforts is more meaningful when you remind each other why you are doing it, while you are in nature's midst!

Step Two:
REVISIT YOUR RECYCLING OPTIONS:
Are you up to date on the latest from your local recycling center?  I try to review what items my local center accepts at least twice a year;  each time I do I seem to discover a new item our family can recycle!

I also find great opportunities for recycling through my local utilities!  Our local electric provider recently hosted a recycling event for used dehumidifiers and a/c units, offering $15 for each item recycled!

Don't keep the information to yourself!  Share it with your friends and neighbors!  What wonderful information for your child to share with their classmates!  Spread the word!

Step Three:
MAKE RECYCLING AUTOMATIC AND FUN:
With so many items to make sure get to the recycling bins, and not in the trash, it helps if everyone in the family is involved.

Of course, you'll need to invest some time creating a recycling center for sorting and storing your items.  We found that making a "game" of recycling helped our family to make sure nothing was missed.

When our children were younger, they enjoyed the game of "shooting" cans and bottles into recycling containers.  Now that they are older, every time someone catches an item going into the trash that shouldn't, they get a coin in their vacation jar.  Whoever has the most in their jar gets to pick our next trip destination!

We also have an ongoing family challenge of making sure unnecessary items are not left plugged in and lights are shut off.  More coins in the jar!

Step Four:
CHALLENGE YOUR PURCHASES
Whether you do it one a week or once a month, challenge one of your regular purchase items.  Is it eco-friendly?  Research the company and product and find out!  If not, find a greener solution!

Planing a big purchase?  You'll likely be researching anyway so be certain to include a look into the greenest and energy star choices available!

Step Five:
PLANT A TREE...OR TEN!
Go ahead and become a tree hugger!  It's a good thing!
