With warmer weather upon us, many families are spending more time out of doors, engaging in healthy activities.  Whether walking the family dog, participating in sports, preparing the yard for summer fun or simple, good active play, every moment spent physically active helps promote our health and well-being.

However, what of our diets?   A successful recipe for raising a healthy family goes beyond promoting physical activity and is directly tied to nutrition and healthy food choices.  While for many of us, making  healthy changes to the meals and snacks we offer our families may be simple, what of the countless children in need in the United States?

More than 16 million children under the age of eighteen in the United States are food insecure—unable to consistently access adequate amounts of nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.  Even more heartbreaking is the fact that more than three million children under the age of five are food insecure. 1
Families in every community across our nation are struggling to provide enough food to nourish their families.  For many, the luxury of choosing food items is not an option.  Rather, they are at the mercy of whatever food items are the least expensive and available.

While having enough food is important, the nutritional quality of that food is equally important.  Approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents ages  2 – 19 are obese, and 1 of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese. 2

As a mother, I am beyond thankful that I have never had to struggle to feed my children.  I have never experienced heart-wrenching despair as I wondered where and how I might secure A meal for my children this day.  My compassion, pity and tears, however, do not fill empty bellies.

SIMPLE acts of giving
provide healthy meals for children in need.

My family has been enriched by participating in Champions For Kids SIMPLE service projects, easy ways for any family or individual to make a meaningful difference.  Each month, a new SIMPLE service project is featured, providing families and individuals who care a few easy steps to follow, to make an impact to help children in need in their communities.  May's project, the Jennie-O Make The Switch, challenges families to consider their own consumption, give up an unnecessary and unhealthy option in their family's diet and use their savings to make a healthy food donation in their community.  My family is giving up the unhealthy habit of Friday night pizza delivery and creating our own healthy meals at home with protein packed Jennie-O turkey!  I discovered some delicious family meal turkey recipes at the Jennie-O website!

Turkey is a great source of protein, with more protein per gram than both chicken and beef, while remaining lower in fat and cholesterol than many other meats. It also delivers vitamins and minerals, especially niacin, which facilitates the conversion of food into available energy, and Vitamin B6, which is important for the health of the nervous system.  Turkey also has selenium, which is essential for proper thyroid and immune function. 3
Make a SIMPLE difference to a child in need and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to join you!
