Fostering Passion For Music In Your Child ~ Ocarina Give Away

Without a doubt, I am biased in regard to the importance of music in the lives of children.  Beginning my own exploration of music education at a very early age, I was fortunate in that my own parents were very supportive of my passion and provided the opportunity to me to explore instruments at my varying whim.

As a parent, while not wanting to push my children into directions of interest, rather provide them opportunities to explore and appreciate and find, or not, the passion within themselves, I was thrilled when both my children decided they wanted to play musical instruments.  Beyond simply enjoying helping them to explore their own musical interests, as music-loving mother, I know how much they will benefit from music education.

musical keyboard, piano keys

This past school year, as a 5th grader, my son and his fellow classmates toured musical offerings, spending several weeks exploring band and orchestra instruments, as well as a chance to participate in choir.  Such a wonderful way to help them learn about the wide variety of musical opportunities available to them.  With the students already having a basic foundation in music, after three years of work with the recorder in elementary school, after the musical tour, my son was ready to make a confident choice regarding his preference for the future.

This summer, in addition to fun time together on the piano, my son and I had the opportunity to explore an instruments new to the both of us, the Ocarina.  This wind instrument is played not in a fashion dissimilar to the recorder, with a single static mouth piece and a variety of finger holes to be covered or not in various combinations to produce the full range of notes.  The tone of the Ocarina is richer and slightly exotic, as compared to the recorder.

Wind Instruments, Unusual Music Instruments, Infinity Ocarina
The Ocarina is thought to have evolved from a line of similar instruments present in Chinese and Mesoamerican cultures over 12,000 years ago.  Ocarinas are crafted in a variety of sizes and shapes, however each with an enclosed body, as compared to other wind instruments, such as oboe, flute and bassoon. Ocarinas can be crafted of wood, glass, clay, metal and plastic, although many of the modern Ocarinas are ceramic, as is ours.

Smooth to the touch, easy to hold and fun to play, my son was excited to share our new musical discovery with both the members of his Destination Imagination team, as well as with his fellow students and music teachers at school.   He reported interest in testing the Ocarina to be very high, with his friends quite impressed by this unusual instrument.

Ocarina Music, Ocarina CD, Learning To Play Ocarina

This 12 Tenor range Infinity Ocarina was easy to play and delightful to hold, with smooth finish and curves.  In addition to the instrument, we received the book, The Art of Ocarina, a compilation of basic to advanced Ocarina lessons and sheet music, along with a CD.  Written by Dennis and Laura Yeh, I found the instruction  within this guide to be very comprehensive, with easy to read fingering diagrams and exercises, progressing from simple to more advanced.  The guide contains twelve detailed lessons, a section of scales and exercises designed to improve skill, as well as a repertoire of melodies to enchant your audience.

Learning To Play Ocarina, Ocarina Music For Beginners

STLOcarina offers a full range of Ocarnia instruments, for the beginner, the profession and even for collectors, in addition to carrying bags and cases.  Those wishing to explore this instrument will also find a thorough collection of sheet music, method books and instructional DVDs and CDs of enchanting Ocarina music.

Both my son and I are enjoying exploring the Ocarina and are enchanted by the music we are learning to play.  With so many options, from modest, inexpensive models to artisan created works of art, STLOcarinas are an excellent idea for sharing your musical passion as a gift to an established or budding music lover!
