Easy Educational Projects: Shedding Light On Green Savings @GELighting

My family is always looking for ways to green up our eco footprint.  With the bitter winter winds soon ready to do their worst, we are motivated to find ways to save energy, as well as minimize our utility bills.  While my husband has taken time before snow fall to take care of outdoor winterizing tasks, my son and I thought it would be interesting to see just how much energy we might save inside the house.

As part of my partnership with GE, I received coupons for my GE light bulbs. All opinions posted about my GE Lighting experience are my own.
Earlier this year, we explored the energy efficient lighting products at Sam's Club and were pleasantly surprised by the wide selection available.  We used the GE energy savings calculator and we amazed by just how much we could save by converting all our bulbs to more energy conservative choices.  For this hunt, my son and I decided to visit Walmart to check out their selection and learn a bit more about our lighting options.

We've been using energy saving CFLs for some time now and have replaced all our standard bulbs.  With still a good number of specialty fixtures to green-fit, we thought it would be interesting to compare the lighting benefits and savings of the various greener choices.  My son was very motivated to participate.  Not only does he share my passion for conservation, he is always up for a challenge.  After my husband and I converted our dining room chandelier with LED bulbs, taken by both the long term savings as well as the extraordinarily low energy usage, my son voiced some concerns.  Although the bulbs do cast a lovely glow, reasonable for the dining room, for whatever reason, he prefers to do his homework in the dining room and has complained that the light output is insufficient.

After surveying our current opportunities for green improvement, we decided to look for smaller than standard bulbs, as well as the larger globes we needed for the kid's bathroom light bar, as well as some standard sized bulbs more to satisfy our curiosity about the illumination difference than for need as we have enough standard CFL bulbs to last quite a long time.  We were greeted by an impressive, if not somewhat overwhelming array of options at Walmart.   Of course, the new legislation calling for greener lighting choices likely plays a significant role in retailers expanding their selections of energy efficient light bulbs.  While I am pleased we are moving in this direction as a nation, I was happy to have the help of my son while we considered the vast array of options!.

Together, we explored the variance between GE Soft White and GE Soft White Halogen bulbs, the greener option most like traditional incandescent bulbs.  Of the energy savings bulbs, these are by far the least expensive, however do not offer the same level of budget or energy savings advantages of the other choices. Already quite familiar and pleased with the CFL bulbs we currently use, we were happy to find GE Mini Spiral CFLs in a number of wattage equivalents and package sizes, the perfect size for a number of our fixtures at home.  Although they were priced slightly higher than standard sized CFLs, we learned that the energy savings and cost of use is actually slightly lower than offered by the standard CFLs.  New technology at work!

We also discovered a new to us line from GE, the reveal bulbs.  While they seem to be the most expensive option, this collection offers attractive use savings, low watt usage and is designed to provide a brighter glow than other energy efficient bulbs.  We also noted the reveal collection included a variety of specialty bulbs, such as 3 way, recessed and chandelier style.

Of all the light bulbs we considered while shopping, the best find, and most interesting in my son's esteemed opinion, were the GE energy smart globe bulbs.  These bulbs are visually designed in the traditional globe shape but house a spiral CFL inside.  With two bathroom light bars that hold far too many large globe bulbs, the thought of replacing all of them has certainly not been a task my husband and I have been looking forward to.  In truth, we plan to replace them in the future as we remodel the rooms.   I was very pleased to learn, not only did Walmart carry these bulbs, further, they are much more affordable than I might have guessed.

Armed with an assortment of energy efficient bulbs to test at home, GE energy smart globes, GE Mini Spiral CFLs, as well as GE Soft White and Soft White Halogen bulbs, we stopped by the craft aisle to grab supplies for our presentation board project.  To help in communicating our findings, our plan is to illustrate the benefits and savings of our various new bulbs, as well as rate the light output in regard to brightness and tone.  In addition to our green savings study and bulb comparison, my son and I decided it would be fun to make a competition of who could find the most other bulbs in our house that could be outfitted with some of the other choices we discovered while shopping together.
