'Have Everything' Gift Purchases? Easy Holiday Guide

2012 Indie Film Holiday Gift Guide
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment

Not quite sure what to pick up for those hard to gift recipients on your holiday shopping list? Gifts of the year's best new films or remastered classics are an easy and successful choice! Well received, easy to find and to fit within your shopping budget, the Indie film titles included in this guide are excellent choices for the more discerning movie watchers you may be shopping for this season!

Beasts of the Southern Wild
2012 Indie Films, Indie Movie Gifts, Hard To Shop For Gifts

Teeming with magic, beauty and pure joy, this crowd-pleasing winner at the Sundance Film Festival has emerged as one of the year’s most acclaimed films. Newcomer Quvenzhan√© Wallis delivers an “Oscar®-worthy performance” (Philadelphia Daily News) as Hushpuppy, the six-year-old force of nature in an isolated bayou community. When her tough but loving father Wink (Dwight Henry) succumbs to a mysterious malady, the fierce and determined girl bravely sets out on a journey to the outside world. But Hushpuppy’s quest is hindered by a “busted” universe that melts the ice caps and unleashes an army of prehistoric beasts.
Lola Versus
2012 Indie Films, Indie Movie Gifts, Indie Romantic Comedy, Hard To Shop Gifts

Greta Gerwig sparkles in this offbeat romantic comedy about looking for answers - and finding yourself - in a complicated world. When 29-year-old Lola (Gerwig) is dumped by her fiancé Luke Joel Kinnaman) just three weeks before the wedding, she embarks on an emotional, year-long adventure of self-discovery filled with love, loss, hilarity and heartache. Guided (and often misguided) by the well-meaning advice of her close friends and eccentric parents, Lola's chaotic journey en route to the big 3-0 proves that a single tumultuous year can yield the lessons of a lifetime.

Ruby Sparks
2012 Indie Films, Indie Romantic Comedies, Hard To Shop Gifts, Best Movie Gifts

From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine comes a “charming and delightful” (Marshall Fine, Huffingtonpost.com) romantic comedy starring Paul Dano and writer-actress Zoe Kazan.  Struggling with writer’s block and a lackluster love life, once-famous novelist Calvin (Dano) creates a beautiful fictitious character named Ruby (Kazan) who inspires him. But not only does this bring his work to life- it also brings Ruby to life- literally! Face-to-face with an actual relationship with his once virtual girlfriend, Calvin must now decide whether to pen this love story or let it write itself. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Elliott Gould, Ruby Sparks is a smart coming-of-age story that proves true love can be remarkably magical.

Sound of My Voice
2012 Indie Films, Best Indie Films 2012, Indie Thrillers, Hard To Shop Movie Gifts

Brit Marling is “intoxicating” (The Huffington Post) and “stirring” (PEOPLE) in the year’s most talked-about psychological thriller. A filmmaker (Christopher Denham) and his girlfriend (Nicole Vicius) set out to expose the beautiful leader of a cult (Marling), who claims to be from the future. But the more they explore, the more danger they face in this ““an intricate and taut thriller” (Claudia Puig, USA Today) from writer-actress Marling and writer-director Zal Batmanglij.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
2012 Indie Films, Indie Comedy Movies, Best Indie Films, New Indie Movies, Hard To Shop Gifts

An award-winning, all-star cast, led by Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Maggie Smith, lights up this “buoyant comedy laced with genuine emotion.” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) When seven cash-strapped seniors decide to “outsource” their retirement to a resort in far-off India, friendship and romance blossom in the most unexpected ways. Smart, life-affirming and genuinely charming, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is a “true classic that reminds us that it’s never too late to find love and a fresh beginning at any age.” (Rex Reed, The New York Observer)

My husband and I have both enjoyed Ruby Sparks and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, finding them delightful, entertaining and engaging. Although I'm not certain that he'll join me in watching the other films included in this guide, sometimes a gal needs to curl up with her favorite afghan, and perhaps the pooch, to take a bit of time to get lost in a great film. Loved The Vest Exotic Marigold Hotel and I am looking forward to seeing Ruby Sparks, Beasts of the Southern Wild sounds soooo interesting! Thanks for that recommendation! I usually like drama and romantic comedy, thrillers one in a while but don't like scary movies at all. LOVE INDIE FILMS!!

Too many movies to list on my must-see, but in general we enjoy action/adventure, scifi, and comedies the most.

I'm still looking for a bunch of movies, between 2 teens, a 4 year old and a hubby who is a movie freak, we are always looking for fun movies; too many to count :-) I love comedies, hubby and the boys love "GUY" movies... the more action, the better...
