Hope for Homelessness? Do You Open Your Heart or Close Your Eyes ~ #AbbottCFK #CBias

Participating in the Abbott Nutritional Pack A Snack program, I find my family's experience to be, at once, rewarding yet bittersweet.  Certainly, the process of discussion and giving together has provided both an important bonding opportunity for my family, as well as served an important lesson in giving that will stay with my children.  Our thoughtfully chosen, nutrition packed items to donate will, no doubt, have an impact on the nutritional well being of local children in need, at least for today.

A nagging thought continues to torture my mind.
What about tomorrow?

My family is committed to continue our giving, appreciating our blessings and sharing them with others.  While our efforts are well received and will have a meaningful impact, the crisis of homelessness to our nation's children and their family's struggles to provide the barest of survival essentials, let alone quality nutritional products is so much larger than my family can affect on our own.

This effort is only successful if we are one of millions.

As my family dropped of this week's donation, I was struck by how visible the City Rescue Mission truly is, in the capitol city of Lansing, Michigan.  As part of a relatively recent revitalization of the downtown area, the shelter is flanked on all sides by successful, inviting businesses, in addition to the Lansing Lugnuts baseball stadium, with the capitol building only blocks away.

How many must dine at the landmark restaurant, neighboring the shelter, and not think of those this organization is struggling to serve?  With grave shame, I admit that I have. The shelter has had to suspend distributing food baskets to hungry families, due to insufficient donations.

How many commute into the city each day, for work, to study, for pleasure, and have closed their eyes to the needs of the community, of children without homes, without meals, bouncing from school and shelter?  What is only a percentage of them opened their hearts, what profound impact that would have.

More.
More opening hearts.
More taking SIMPLE action.

Make A Difference:
Gather your friends, family, and coworkers to provide nutritious snacks for children in need. Items like Pediasure®, Pediasure SideKicks®, and ZonePerfect® bars would be great to share! Give the Abbott Nutrition snack packs to an organization in your community that serves children (like a school, religious organization, or nonprofit).

One Zone Perfect® Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar and one PediaSure® Vanilla Sidekicks drink have the power to make an impactful contribution to a child's nutritional health, for under $2.00!

Rally A Group Into SIMPLE Action

Compelled to amplify our efforts into a larger one, I realized how many groups, organization and teams my family interacts with, during the course of a year.  How simple it would be to share the Champions for Kids program with them and ask them to participate through a food drive, with hopes that many would be inspired to continue the giving and help spread the word.  Countless opportunities and such minimal effort required.

View the SIMPLE nutrition and hygiene pack we created to share on Google +.

SIMPLE Ways To Help The Homeless In Your Community ~ #AbbottCFK ~ #CBias

As I approach another notch in my chronological belt, I find myself increasingly determined to not settle into my middle years, rather inspired to make each year meaningful.  As mother to older children, I am now afforded the precious luxury of more time.  More time to reflect, to create goals, to make a difference.

Predominant in my recent reflection is a growing dissatisfaction with my current career, often referenced as the 'blasted day job'.  At the end of a day, a week, a year, the expended energy, time and effort I have committed leaves me empty.  I crave opportunity to become involved, to make meaningful contributions to my community, to reach out a hand to one in need.

With a demanding work schedule as well as a calendar of family events and commitments, it has been far too easy to push my nagging thoughts into the 'I'll think about it tomorrow category' as another year ticks by.  Although a full career change will take some time, making a difference now is SIMPLE, requiring only the barest of efforts and an open heart.

The Champions for Kids program is specifically designed to enable those with unrealized passion for giving to make a difference in their communities.  With SIMPLE Service Projects already designed and easy to facilitate, even those with the busiest of schedules can participate.  Whether performed by an individual, a family or a school or church group, these projects target the most deserving of our communities in ways that can make a powerful impact.

Participating in the Abbott Nutritional Champions for Kids Pack a Snack project has been a rewarding, although heart-wrenching, experience for my family.  With aim to address the hunger needs of children with quality food items, my family selected products with high nutritional content, such as PediaSure® and Zone Perfect Bars®, along with easy meal staples to donate to a local shelter.

The education my family gained from exploring the devastating and prevalent issue of childhood hunger and homelessness across the nation and specific to Michigan was, at once, heartbreaking and inspiring.

Homeless Facts

  • Families with children are among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population 1
  • Estimated number of homeless children in the United States ranges from 800,000 to 1.2 million. 1
  • 1 in 50 children in the United States are homeless. 2
  • At least half of homeless children are under the age of 5.3
  • Homeless children have higher rates of asthma, ear infections, stomach problems, and speech problems. 4
  • Homeless children experience more mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and withdrawal. 1
  • Homeless children four times as likely to have delayed development. 1
  • 51% of homeless people in Michigan are adults and children in families. 5
  • In Michigan, 51% of homeless families are the working poor.  5
  • Victims of domestic violence constitute 13 percent of all sheltered persons. 6

Ways YOU Can Help!
LEARN about the hunger needs of children in your community by inviting a teacher, social worker, food pantry employee, or homeless shelter volunteer to talk with your family, friends, and co-workers.

GATHER your family, friends, and co-workers and ask them to bring nutritious foods like Pediasure®, Pediasure SideKicks®, and ZonePerfect® bars to help children in need.

GIVE the nutritious food to a school, church, food pantry, or non-profit organization in your community.  These organizations need snacks and meals for children who do not get enough nutritious food on a daily basis.  This food doesn’t just help children have enough to eat – it helps them have happier and healthier futures.

Join me and become One of Millions, reaching out to those in dire need in your community!  Inspired and rewarded by my family's individual contribution to our local shelter, we are reaching out to one of the groups we are active in, the Destination Imagination group in which my son participates and in which I am a team leader to collect even more nutrition packed items to donate.  With all teams gathering in February for a practice session, what better time to ask each member to bring a contribution that will make such an impactful difference in the life and future of a child in need.

Winter Hair Styling Tips ~ Easy, Beachy Waves with Conair Infiniti You Wave Ultra #G!veaway

Winter hair blahs getting the best of you?

As for the Teen Diva and myself, with our long tresses, a bad hair day can completely throw off our mood. The winter season, with dry heat and plenty of static electricity abounding seems to result in a disproportionate amount of those hair challenging days.

Winter Hair Styling Tips

Fortunately, using the right hair products and the right hair styling tools can turn a potential bad hair day into a fab hair day! If you are battling the harsh winter elements, try these tips from Conair.
  • Tame winter static and flyaways with leave-in conditioner. Wash and towel-dry hair, spray conditioner on and comb-through for even distribution. Slip on your favorite sweater and go!
  • If you wear a hat, cap or scarf to ward off the cold make sure it is loose enough to allow scalp circulation
  • Use a natural boar bristle hairbrush with a wooden handle to reduce hair static. If all else fails, run a dryer sheet over your locks!
  • For deep winter conditioning, try honey! Massage ½ cup clover honey into wet hair from roots to tips. Wrap your hair in plastic, and then wrap a towel turban around the plastic. Leave on 20 minutes, shampoo and condition. Sweet!
Hair Tools That Tame

Creating a fab hair day in the winter isn't necessarily about a controlled look; rather it is about taking control. Look ahead to warmer days and embrace an easy, beachy look to lighten your spirits. The Conair Infiniti You Wave Ultra makes it easy!

Anything goes with the Conair Infiniti You Wave Ultra! Specifically designed to create a casual look that appear effortless and carefree, using the You Wave Ultra was simple to master. With 30 second instant Ultra High heat in this unique three barrel design, both the Diva and I were able to easily create a fresh, easy style that was both attractive and mood setting. Created with Tourmaline Ceramic technology, the You Wave Ultra helps to reduce frizz and and eliminate static; tremendous benefits for the season!

For a quick style, simply take a top section of hair, starting near the roots and hold within the You Wave for ten seconds and then move down the strand. Altering the angle at which you use the You Wave helps to create a style with all over, easy appeal. We found that pinning up the upper hair layers of our hair and working through the thickness, from under to top layers, added even more bounce and volume.

Our Take
While the diva doesn't crimp her hair very often, this Mom burned through a few crimpers in the 80's! (flashbacks - shudder). We both loved the softer look afforded by the You Wave Ultra, finding it easy to create a quick style and excellent for increasing volume when our schedules allowed for addition time to wave by layers. With a suggested retail of $45.99, national availability at your favorite drug stores and mass retailers, as well as at the Conair website, and limited five year warranty, the Conair Infiniti You Wave Ultra is an easy addition to your hair styling arsenal, as well as a great gift idea!

***GIVEAWAY***
Conair is generously offering That's What She Said readers an opportunity to win their own Infiniti You Wave Ultra (value $45.99)! This rafflecopter giveaway is open to residents of US, 18+, and will end on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 12:01am EST.

Better Than Botox? Putting Elite Serum To The Anti Aging Skin Care Test ~ G!veaway

Thank you to
Closer To Lucy
for presenting this anti-aging, skim pampering feature!

Have I ever shared with y’all that I am sleep deprived?
No. Really, I’m seriously deprived.

Ever since my back surgery I do not love bed……I want to, Ireally do but my back hates me. I average about 4-5 hours of sleep a night, inmy youth (which was completely wasted on my younger self) Icould have handled such a short amount of time – but now? Notsomuch, y’all 40 is (gulp) about a week away…..please spare me the sympathy cards or words of encouragement about 40 being thenew 20, cause we all know that there are things that my 20 year-old self is notgiving back to my 40 year-old bod…ummm, kay?
I’m tired and it shows. ..sure I’m still cute if I were a Cacomistle.

A few friends and I are giving Elite Serum a try -- the incredible needle-free scientific breakthrough in skincare technology makes wrinkles and fine lines disappear around your eyes!

Isn't it cool looking?
Well sound good to me – You already know that MUF (mr. UnFun) is anti-cosmetic interventionanything, which leaves Botox something Ilie about or just avoid so that he stays happy….sigh, honesty is a rough roadto travel but needles don’t excite me anyway so this could be alternative.
What are the benefits of Elite Serum?

  • Formulated with the highest concentration of pharmaceutical-grade ingredients.
  • Rich seaweed extract base as used by the world's most expensive serums.
  • Contains scientifically advanced peptides proven to cause DNA rejuvenation.
  • Delivers a youthful and vibrant appearance around the eyes.
  • Rapidly brings oxygen and nutrients to the eye area.
  • Reduces the appearance of dark circles and puffiness.
  • Diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Works directly under and around the eye area within minutes.
  • Ultra-lightweight and fast-absorbing application.
  • No injection needed. It works on areas where the Botox™ solution can not.
  • A Cooling, hyper toning sensation indicates that the serum is working.
  • Scientifically designed as hypoallergenic, non-sensitizing and non-irritating.
  • Can be used safely and beneficially in conjunction with other skin care products.
  • Ability to work alone as needed as a powerful eye serum.
  • Manufactured in the USA in an advanced FDA licensed pharmaceutical laboratory.
I'm totally hoping for this type of results.
The difference with Elite Serum is the combination ofpharmaceutical-grade peptides and natural moisturizers. It's been clinicallyproven to reduce wrinkle depth in only 28 days……I’ve just started so I’ll letyou know.

Buy it!
Or
Win it!

The peeps over at Elite Serum has teamed up with thebloggers of Collective Media Magic to give one lucky shared reader a syringe oftheir own!

Filling Our Cart, Filling Our Hearts. SIMPLE Ways to Give. #AbbottCFK #CBias

I am grateful, beyond reasonable expression, that I have never known the worry of where my children will be sleeping tonight.

Weighing the need of a meal with medical care, has never made me weep.

I have never had to face the quiet, hungry eyes of my child, with empty hands.

I have never given enough of myself or my resources.

I am one of millions.

Millions of people, just like me,
who have caring and compassion in their hearts
that fail to make the simple effort
to make a world of difference,
 to a mother in despair.

Not nearly enough.
Not often enough.

With aim to inspire to serve, Champions for Kids and Abbott are encouraging millions to take a SIMPLE action that will make an impactful difference in their communities.

INSTRUCTIONS: Gather your friends, family, and coworkers to provide nutritious snacks for children in need. Items like Pediasure®, Pediasure SideKicks®, and ZonePerfect® bars would be great to share! Give the Abbott Nutrition snack packs to an organization in your community that serves children (like a school, religious organization, or nonprofit). Click here to send us your great Report and Photos!

With a giving plan outlined, with SIMPLE directions, giving has never been easier!  My family, committed to more giving and volunteering this year, than ever before, selected the City Rescue Mission of Lansing to donate our Abbott Nutrition Snack Pack to.  A caring organization who have been serving my community since 1911, but unable to provide food baskets due to insufficient donations.

As we shopped, I was struck by how SIMPLE it is to make such a difference.

For the price of one quick meal out for my family, I could provide significant daily nutrition to three children for a week or healthy snacks daily for six children.

Don't let your good intentions become regrets of inaction.

Become One of Millions.

Rex Reviews JW Pet ~ Intelligent Ideas for Happy Pets ~ Prize Pack #Giveaway

Rex Reviews...

My name is Rex.
I am a three year old Yellow Lab and I am a squeaky toy addict.
It's true.
I'm not sure just exactly what it is about squeaky toys that gets my pup heart a-pumping and my tail a-wagging but I love those squeaky squeakers.

When I was a pup, my Mom brought home some rubber squeaky toys. Ah, the memories. I squeaked those babies all over the house and then gutted them.
(shrug)

Mom and Dad picked up all the pieces of rubber, wrestled me for the squeaker and threw the whole business away. "Hey, I just got that squeaker out!" They aren't very good listeners.

After that, Mom started bringing home furry squeakers. I didn't mind. I'm an equal opportunity squeaker addict. They seemed to want to play with it, with me so I humored them for awhile. It wasn't easy, but I waited a couple of days and then gutted it. Of course, here she came again and took all of it away. "Woman, I was using that!" (sigh)

Every few weeks or so, Mom would bring home another furry squeaky. Dad would make some frowny face grumbling noises but, eventually, they gave me the furry squeaker.

I tried everything! I tried gutting them in my den, behind the couch. I even growled once, to let them know how strongly I felt, but that didn't work out so well. They can't help it; they are slow learners, but they mean well.

I have other human friends that look out for me, though. Like the mailman. I love that guy! Almost every day, he leaves a treat for me in the box by the road. I can hear him coming from a mile away! I bark at him from the window and his noisy box barks back. Kind of sounds like a goose.

Sometimes, my other friend comes in the BIG BOX and leaves little boxes at the front door. I think he is a little shy; I always tell him to come on in, but he never does.

When Mom gets the boxes, sometimes she brings them to me. I love those days! Now, the box itself is quite a treat because they have SO MANY smells to sniff and I could chew and rip on that baby for hours. Of course, I got to do that about twice. Mom usually takes the box away. (shaking head)

The last time a box came for me was pretty exciting. There were three rubbery squeakers inside! Aroooo rooo! There was a baseball with a squeaker, a bowling pin with a squeaker and a football with a squeaker. It was so exciting, I couldn't decide which one I liked the best! I ran all over the house, squeaking them as loud as I could to let my boy and girl know it was play time.

They seemed pretty excited, too. I let everyone get a turn to play with my new squeakers and even played fetch with the football with Dad in the backyard. He likes that.

It took a while to finally wear them all out, but when they went to bed, I hid the squeakers in different spots. I hid one in my den, one in the couch and one in the cat's climber. ( I didn't have to worry about her - she's just cranky and boring)

The next day, after my people left in the morning, I retrieved the bowling pin so I could gut it. I must have chewed on that thing for an hour, but no luck! I tried every chewy, gnawing trick I know - no dice! Not on the bowling pin, not on the baseball, not on the football.

When Mom got home and saw the squeakers, she was so happy. She was making excited noises to Dad when he got home and then they both came and looked at the squeakers. "Not sure what you guys look so happy about; these squeakers are defective", I said. When my boy and girl came home, they had to come look, too. Even my boy looked happy.

(I mentioned they are kind of slow, right?) So, I squeaked all the squeakers and pulled on the squeakers to show my people that they were broken. They just didn't get it. Dad wanted me to play fetch with him again outside. (sigh)

Now, I'm the kind of pup that likes to try to find the positive side in any situation. Even though these squeakers were clearly not of the same quality of all the squeakers I've had before (read: un-guttable) there are some advantages to them.

First, Mom hasn't even tried to throw them away. Second, I always have something to squeak. Lastly, Dad does seem to really like to play fetch, so I play squeaky football with him every night. It's good exercise for him.

If for some crazy, human reason you want un-guttable squeaky toys, JW Pet is the place to go. They have stuff for dogs, cats, birds, fish and other small animals. Be warned though, they seem to be human (read: a little slow).

We know dogs love squeakers and they go wild for the sound. So, we wanted to find a way to make squeaky toys as safe as possible. After all, we care very much about every dog’s well-being. Our product designers began by considering a number of possible ways to build a squeaker into a toy. The goal was to make the squeaker as sturdy as possible. First, we surrounded each squeaker with a cone-shaped, hard plastic housing. Then, we created a unique and patented way to “lock” the squeaker into the toy and protect it. Of course, there are less expensive squeakers and faster ways to place them into a dog toy. But there is virtually nothing exactly like ours available from anyone else. No one takes as much care with squeakers as we do.

Remote Scottish village to open mainland UK’s only working goldmine

A remote, extremely rural Scottish village is to open mainland UK’s only working gold mine.

The BBC has reported that Scotgold Resources is due to open the mine and that it will be open between eight and ten years to take advantage of the current high price of gold.

The village – called Tyndrum – is on the edge of the beautiful Rannoch Moor in Scotland’s West Highlands.

Work started on the Cononish mine in the ‘80’s when gold prices were high; many people will remember the immense price peak that gold hit in the summer of 1980. However prices gradually came down as the UK’s economy recovered from recession. This made work on the mine far less financially viable than before, hence the closure of the mine.

Taking advantage

Now that gold prices have been on the up – peaking at over $1,900 an ounce in September – work is set to begin in the mine once more. Gold prices have soared since the global financial crisis hit in 2007 and has tightened its iron grip in the years since. This is because investors are always seeking safe places to store their capital. Gold is so rare that it will always be an attractive – and highly sought-after – way to do this.

Investors are expecting the mine to yield 20,000 ounces of gold over the next eight to ten years. This is sure to please the best gold buyers, who depend on gold to make their profits.
However, finding such investors was difficult for Scotgold and they faced opposition from UK investors. Australian company Scotgold eventually turned to their home country for the capital they needed.

Opening the mine once more will create jobs, vital in today’s economy with the record levels of unemployment that the UK is suffering right now.

Gold is certainly back in fashion. Lots of people have woken up to the fact that selling their gold jewellery can pay far more than it did pre-recession. However, with reports of cash for gold scams doing the rounds repeatedly; it makes sense to use a gold price comparison site so that you can see who is paying the best price for gold.

Fighting Childhood Hunger ~ #AbbottCFK #ChampionsForKids #CBias

Every holiday season, my children select a local charity to donate a portion of their Christmas gift money; my husband and I match their donations.  Usually varying the charity year to year, our family is overwhelmed with compassion for those we reach out to, as well as enriched by the opportunity to give in a meaningful way.  Our bond as a family is strengthened.  We appreciate our good fortune on a new level.  We pledge to do more.

Of course, as the Christmas decorations are cleared away and our hectic schedule resumes, somehow, our commitment to continue reaching out to those in need is shuffled to the back burner.  All too soon, another holiday season is approaching and we find ourselves reproachful about the giving we did not do throughout the year; our actualized efforts far too few.

Busy schedules and good intentions aside, the needs continue.
Our pledge:  May this be the year we give more; more of our time, ourselves, our hearts.

In this spirit, my family is honored to be a part of a Simple Service Program - the Abbott Champions For Kids effort to combat childhood hunger and offering healthy choices for struggling families.

More than 16 million children under the age of eighteen in the United States are food insecure - unable to consistently access adequate amounts of nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.  Even more heartbreaking is the fact that more than three million children under the age of five are food insecure.  ~ Champions for Kids
Making a difference to children in need is simple.  As my family grocery shops this week, we will be selecting healthy foods and snacks to share with a local organization.  As a family, we have chosen to the City Rescue Mission of Lansing, an organization that has been supporting area homeless and low income families with food, clothing and shelter since 1911, functioning solely upon donations and support from local churches, organizations and individuals.

As this will be my family's first time supporting the City Rescue Mission, we spent some time exploring their website, learning about the ways they support the needy in our community and taking note of the items on their Wish List for donations.

Food Baskets are currently not being distributed due to insufficient donations.

It is difficult to put into words, the impact reading the above statement on their website has on me; it is heart-wrenching; it is profound.

In an upcoming post, I will share our shopping trip and the Abbott Nutrition Snack Pack Giving Basket we will create to share.  I invite you, not only to the upcoming piece, but to explore the Champions for Kids Simple Service projects, to find a project that is meaningful to you, your family and your community and to become involved to make a difference.

Please join my family in our efforts to keep the giving going strong all throughout the year.

How do you or your family give back in your community?
What causes inspire your giving spirit?
